PREPOSITIONS AND THEIR USAGE

A preposition is a word placed before a noun or a pronoun to show how the person or thing is related to something else. PREPOSITIONS are governed by simple rules..... if you know the rules you can never ever go wrong while attempting questions on prepositions. following are some rules relating to different prepositions used in the english language. 1) Across means from side to side. Example: the child ran across the road. 2) Under is used with people and things. Example: he works under adv. Raman. 3) Underneath is usually used with things. Example: his belongings are kept underneath the coat. 4) Among is used when more than two things or persons are referred to. Example: they divided the money among themselves 5) Between is when two persons, places etc are referred to. Example: Karnataka is between Andhra Pradesh and kerala. 6) Towards is used in sense of "in the direction of" as regard to "in relation to". Example: Towards the evening her condition became worse. His attitude towards Indians is well known. 7) With is used for instruments. Example: he writes with a blue pen. 8) Of indicates origin, authorship, causes, connection. Example: the girl of beauty. 9) Off means away from. Example: off duty(away from duty) 10) Over indicates the movements from upright position, motion towards, or at a level higher than. Example: he jumped over the wall. 11) By is used for agents or doer. Example: the roof was blown off by the wind. 12) To means towards, in the direction. It is also used to indicated comparison and ratio. Example: rajan is senior to me. 13) Into indicates movements to the inside of something. Example: she walked into the room 14) At is used to denote some state or condition. Example: at war, at peace. this will be follwed by more prepositions and their usage. happy realizations !!!
