Oct 14th 2012, 09:00

When there are two verbs in a sentence, the first verb is the auxiliary. It is also called the helping verb. Auxiliary verbs are of two types : 1. Primary Auxiliary 2. Modal Auxiliary 1. Primary Auxiliary
  • Can be used as a main and a auxiliary verb
  • Changes as per the subject.
  • Types of auxiliaries-
  1. to be: are, is, was, were
  2. to do: do, does, did
  3. to have: have, has, had
2. Modal Auxiliary
  • Can only function as auxiliary verb
  • Do not change as per the subject
  • Types of modal auxiliaries-
can, could, may, might, will, would, shall, should, must, ought Some Basic Functions of Modal Auxiliaries: can - ability can't - disability could - past ability may - possibility might - remote possibility will - determination would - past habitual action shall - future should - advice must - compulsion ought to - obligation need - necessity need not - absence of necessity dare not - absence of courage I'll post a small exercise on this soon. :)
