Oct 3rd 2012, 07:19

Here's an interesting exercise for those who're tired of the mundane method of learning words and their meanings in order to improve their vocabulary. Read the following passage carefully (I realise some parts of it don't make sense). It's your job to substitute the underlined word with a synonym so as to make it fit with the rest of the passage and make perfect sense. This exercise will help in 2 ways: i. Vocabulary building ii. Realising the context in which certain words are more appropriate placed than their own synonyms Of late, there has been a visible shift in the courts' approach in dealing with the cases involving the (1)assimilation of social (2)benediction legislations. The attractive mantras of globalisation and liberalisation are fast becoming the raison d'etre of the judicial process and an impression has been created that the constitutional courts are no longer (3)benign towards the plight of industrial and unorganised workers. In a large number of cases, (4)succour has been denied to the employees falling in the category of workmen, who are illegally (5)economized from service by creating bylanes and sidelanes in the jurisprudence developed by this court in three decades. It is therefore the need of the hour to realise that the approach of the courts must be (6)congenial with the constitutional (7)ontology of which the Directive Principles of State Policy constitute an integral part, and justice due to the workman should not be denied by (8)captivating the (9)casuistic and (10)illogical grounds put forward by the employer – public or private. 1.
