The importance of questions on legal reasoning in any lawschool entrance exam can never be underestimated. However good one may be atEnglish, Mathematics or General Studies, without a mastery over the section onlegal reasoning, the journey to clear the entrance exam would certainly be morearduous and tiring. That is approximately 1/4th of the total number ofquestions in the entrance paper. Surely such a large chunk cannot be neglectedand any denial of its importance is a potential disaster. The common questions whichwould arise now are: So how should one approachthe questions under this section? Do we need to mug up information like what isdefined under what and what sections of XYZ statute or act? Do we need to readthe bare acts in detail and mug up all the information we come across? Do westart googling every concept we come across and make detailed notes on them? Theanswer to all these questions is in negative. These are strictly the things oneshouldn't fall prey to while preparing for this section. Remember the purposehere is not to test your legal knowledge but your legal acumen. Those who clearthe exam will have five long years in law school and an awfully long careerahead to understand the nitty-gritties of law. What is required for the purposeof exam is to think analytically and think with a legal acumen inside yourhead. Sowhat is this legal acumen? Is it some book or some formula that needs to beperfected? Sadly, it is nothing of the sort. It is something, which isingrained in the psyche of every person, and it would be a misnomer to say thatpeople don't have it. It is ingrained in every person's head. The task is tobring it out, hone it and make it perfect. We all have a sense of right andwrong, just and unjust. Here we think on precisely these matters only but notfrom a moral viewpoint but a legal one. Remember. Do not fall pray to arrivingat answers from a moral or ethical point of view. Law only prohibits that whichis prohibited by it. Think from a legal standpoint. The key to crackingquestions of legal reasoning is to not make any assumptions. Stay purely withinthe ambit of the legal principle provided. Even if you have studied certainprovisions in the course of your preparation, do not apply them if the answercan be worked out by applying the given principles. For eg. If the given principle statesthat every person who commits murder will be awarded Rs. 1000. Then this is theprinciple you need to apply to the fact situation and reward the person whocommits murder despite the fact that you know its against the law per se. The law for the purpose of the paper iswholly and solely what is given in the paper and you are required to keep yoursubjective opinions aside and answer the questions objectively. Questions have to beanswered strictly in tandem with the principles provided. The key to success in this vital section isidentification of range of problems asked and a careful strategy whereby yousolve a lot of such questions. This would acquaint you with the different typesof questions asked and would help you in thinking analytically. So keep following thisthread as we'll be discussing various legal aptitude questions and how youshould go about cracking them. We'll also be putting up sample questions andthen work on them together. To test yourself, go to the TestCentral link andtry the legal aptitude sectional tests to assess where you stand. All the Best.
