Comprehension - Is it a tragedy?
Oct 13th 2012, 07:07

I had been trying to analyse why we need to learn comprehension skills right from the very basic of our English grammar. The structure of English Language consists of grammar along with comprehension. I was never in deep love with such a skill. In fact, at times I used to curse the language for making me feel so stupid to solve them being a science student. The reason was I never felt and understood the practicality of such a skill. I albeit, learnt comprehending skills for gaining marks with being clueless with its usage. Just like any other student, I started learning the skills and became very good at it. In fact this is the only section from English which am comfortable with. Me having a science background, I started understanding its importance after a while when I saw IIT quests paper. It has a section based on comprehending skills. For law aspirants, comprehension is a tact which not only checks out one's reading capability (speed being an essential part) but also the aptitude skill of solving or getting an answer from the given situation. Vocab is essential in the field of law, you being a in house counsel or being a litigator, words are essential. CLAT is one of the best test which checks out the skill of comprehension in the best possible manner. The questions are lengthy, interesting and fun to solve them. If am not wrong, it carries the highest score from English section. If u can master it, then no doubt English will save you during the time of crisis. How to solve a comprehension? 1. Start reading many novels, journals, cases or articles in order to gain speed. Use a pencil to read between the lines. Run the pencil fast that will save your time. Reading the article, premises or anything for that matter a little fast is the key to success in solving them properly during the adrenaline hours of exam. Try reading always with a pencil and run with the pencil. 2. Reading many good books, journals, cases or novels is a very good habit. Regular reading of editorials will improve the knowledge of how the structure of a sentence should be. The fact of reading proper and error less English is a key to success for solving the question based on error. 3. Improve vocabulary, this is key to answer and understand the premises. Enriching out your vocab will be helpful not only for the exam but also for future prospect. Learning new words will help you to solve questions based on meaning which is a very common trend of CLAT, NLUD, SET, LSAT. 4. Try reading the premises and solve them as much as you can. Find out which study hour suits you the most. I never was able to stay awake at nights (though the situation got reversed after coming to Law School), so I used to solve them during day or early morning. Peace, comity is essential to gain a tactful skill and to be very perfect on it. Try solving them when the entire place is very calm, so that you give max concentration. 5. Drink water after solving each question during the practice session. Stop doing this habit when you are just a month away from your exam. As, giving break is important because, at times you might get monotonous of reading the same stuffs always. 6. The best manner to save time is nothing but to start out solving the question on comprehension by reading out the questions first before even touching the premises. Then try finding out the key words in the premises and that helps a lot to solve questions perfectly. This had helped and surely will help you too. 7. Try solving out past years question papers. Pattern remains the same always. In order to get an idea of the type of RCs being asked this is a mandate to solve past years paper. 8. There is no short cut to success. There is no hard way either. Be smart, use a stop watch and make sure that you don't use more than 15 min to solve 2 RCs. 9. Pray to god, relax with friends, go for a movie and practice it daily. It is said that if you continue doing the same thing for 13 days, it becomes a habit. So for students like me who detest studies, try out this mantra. I am sure this will be very helpful. And you will see the change within 21 days. 10. Thank you and all the best for you CLAT, NLUD, SET, LSAT – 2013.
